Captivated by the guitar’s rich musical history and romantic nature, Neal pursued advanced studies at The University of North Carolina School of the Arts. At UNCSA, he received the Aaron Shearer Scholarship for Guitar and took a B.Mus. in Classical Guitar Performance. Upon graduation Neal moved to Kansas City, Missouri and started an early childhood music education program at Kansas City’s Early Childhood Learning Center. Neal first picked up the Renaissance lute in 2015, studying initially with lutenist Edward Martin and later under the guidance of lutenist and musicologist Jeffery Noonan. Neal developed a special interest in the lute manuscripts and music of 17th-century Scotland, an interest that continues to fascinate and guides his work with the lute. In 2017, he released It Is a Wonder to See, a contemporary recording of 17th-century Scottish lute music in collaboration with guitarist and percussionist Ryan Worthley. More recently, Neal released his first solo album We All Must Rain Now, housing selections from the Balcarres Lute Book arranged for the seldom-heard soprano lute. 2019 saw the release of Still Raining, arrangements of Baroque Scottish lute music played on the classical guitar. He presented a four part concert series in collaboration with KKFI, 90.1, Kansas City Community Radio. Neal, alongside KKFI’s Global Roots Radio host Nilufar Movahadi, captivated audiences with an interactive performance series exploring the history of Renaissance and Baroque lute music in 17th century Scotland. He lectured on the same topic for Springfield Missouri’s Empower Abilities organization, and was selected as a featured artist for Early Music Missouri’s 2021 concert season, performing French and Scottish lute music alongside musicologist Dr. Jeffery Noonan. 2021 saw Neal’s release of Gypsies Lilt, a recording that spans the full range of Scottish lute repertoire. Neal’s future projects will continue his work preserving ancient Scottish melodies through arranging, recording, and performance.
