Patrick O’Brien was a much-beloved teacher and p Patrick O’Brien was a much-beloved teacher and performer. An accomplished musician, he played lute, theorbo and guitar, and to some degree, most plucked-string instruments. But he was most revered as a teacher. Inspiring and generous to a fault, he helped many players afflicted by musicians’ injuries and repetitive stress disorders. The videos of Pat’s teaching that are collected on our website were recorded by Pat in the early 1990’s as part of his rehab work. They were not originally intended for public viewing, but now provide a rare window into his wisdom and insights.

Many people have seen one of these instruments in Many people have seen one of these instruments in old paintings or movies, and imagined its sound played in chambers, or large halls for dances of earlier times. Perhaps some of you already play a string instrument, but playing this bowl-back wooden beauty feels like an unachievable dream... The lute is not the most common instrument nowadays but it's beautiful repertoire takes us back every time we hear it.
But good news: getting started is not as hard as you may think! The Lute Society of America has a ton of resources, including lutes for rent, a database of tutors and even lute festivals!
Don't be afraid to join our community, it could be the first step towards living that dream.
